5 Signs you need a new mattress

A good mattress is critical for good back health and an undisturbed night’s sleep. As a general rule you should look to change your mattress every 8-10 years but there are some tell tale signs that your mattress may need to be replaced. The mattress you choose should be best suited to you personally, a mattress which may have the correct firmness for one person may not be right for another.

Getting a good night’s sleep can improve memory, help you live longer and reduce stress. An uncomfortable mattress might be responsible for your lack of sleep, so you may want to consider a new one!

Signs you need a new mattress

Tiredness and Aching – Perhaps most obviously, if you are experiencing increased tiredness its possible your mattress is either getting old or is not suitable for you. One of the main reasons for reduced sleep is from an unsuitable or old mattress, so if you are suffering from a lack of sleep in may be time to invest in a new mattress. Or if you’ve recently been experiencing new aches and pains which seem to appear in the morning, it is most likely down to an unsuitable mattress. Sleeping on a mattress which does not provide you with the necessary support will give you back and neck pains, mostly lower back. If this sounds familiar, you may want to consider investing in a new mattress.

Noises – Your mattress should not be making noises, so if you are starting to hear strange creaking noises when you move in the night, your mattress is probably past its best before date. Noisy mattresses not only disturb your sleep but most likely are causing you other issues which you’re not yet aware of.

Rolling – If you find that you are rolling into the centre of the bed or onto your partners side of the bed it could be a sign that your mattress is not supportive enough. Similarly, if you wake up when your partner moves in bed it is probably a sign that your mattress is not firm enough, or that the bed is not big enough! Did you know that a standard double bed shared between 2 people leaves you with less room than a baby has in their cot?

Lumps and Bumps – If you look at your mattress has it got a lot of lumps and bump? Some dips are natural for example if it dips where you sleep this is fine and usually happens when you sleep in the same place every night. However, if it looks like springs are poking out or is unusually bumpy then its probably a clear sign of an old mattress and should be replaced as soon as possible.

You prefer hotels – Usually you’ll find that sleeping in a different bed can be difficult as it is not what you’re used to, but if you find that you prefer other beds to your own and get a better nights sleep when away from home, it could be a sure sign that your mattress needs to be replaced.
