How to Achieve Perfect Bedroom Lighting

Lighting is incredibly important in any home, especially in your bedroom as it doesn’t tend to get as much natural light as other rooms. There are many benefits that accompany good interior lighting in terms of style, practicality and health. Lighting can completely change the appearance of a room, it has the ability to make spaces appear larger, more interesting and even more expensive. Both the right type and amount of lighting can completely alter the feel of a room to make it more clinical or cosier, depending on the affect you desire. There is a huge range of different types of lighting, all of which play a different role and have varying benefits. Task lighting for example is used for concentration and completing tasks such as applying make-up, reading or working; the correct task lighting can improve focus and help concentration. In general, lighting plays a huge role in terms of health. Exposure to light in the daytime and darkness at night is what aligns the human circadian rhythm; letting our bodies know when it is time to sleep. Natural light is generally recommended as the best for this process, however as natural light is not as present in bedrooms as in other rooms, it’s important to make up for this lack of brightness with artificial lighting that can mimic the traits of natural light as closely as possible. It’s also important to make sure that you have appropriate socket placement distributed throughout the room when adding lamps to your bedroom to avoid any safety hazards. By spreading light throughout the room, you also have the opportunity to use a mixture of lower wattage bulbs rather than a single high one.


There are three main types of artificial lighting; general, task and mood or accent lighting. General lighting refers to lighting you need to complete day to day activities such as getting dressed or searching for things within the room. Task lighting is brighter and used for things like doing make up, reading or working. Mood lighting is typically used for relaxation or similarly accent lighting can be used to showcase a particular item or area within the room. The purpose of the lighting also affects what colour light you should choose. For example blue or white lights should be used in task lighting as these particular shades causes alertness and can improve concentration. That being said, it’s also important to consider having some softer options come bed time, as bright white or blue lights can have negatively impacted on sleep itself.


Your bedroom is one of the only rooms in the house where the lighting may need to differ as the day develops. In the morning, the lighting needs to support waking up and the ability to be able to see the required tasks for that specific time, whereas at night you want to be able to relax and induce sleep, which invites a dimmer, softer light. For privacy whilst in the bedroom, curtains are often drawn, making good artificial lighting that mimics daylight essential. Installing a dimmer is one way to make your lights multifunctional – as a dimmer has the ability to provide you with the necessary light, whatever time of day, to ensure your sleep cycle is not disturbed.

That being said, key points to remember include; spreading lighting throughout the entire room, mimicking daylight as closely as possible and making sure you are installing lighting that is fit for purpose. By sticking to these guidelines, you should be able to achieve the perfect bedroom lighting, for both day and night.
